Every month we’ll bring you a profile of a photographer who has captured the people, the food and the spaces that make up the world of barbecue.

Wyatt McSpadden – Austin, Texas

I’ve been shooting pictures at BBQ places around Texas for better than 25 years. I’ve had the pleasure of meeting and photographing the folks who smoke the meats, take the money, clean the tables and enjoy this great food. Until the Spring of 2013 I hadn’t met Tootsie Tomanetz, pitmaster at Snow’s BBQ in Lexington, Texas.

My friend Will and I arrived well before dawn on a clear, dry April morning to shoot for the Texas Monthly 50 Best BBQ Joint issue. I introduced Will and myself to Tootsie telling her I figured I was the only photographer in the whole damn state who hadn’t made her picture. She wrapped her arms around us both and said we’d better get busy. I was in love. Since then I’ve wanted to have a Tootsie slide show and thanks to Texas Monthly I now have the chance.

Wyatt has been making photographs for Texas Monthly about barbecue and a whole host of other subjects for decades. He even shot the stunning cover of this year’s barbecue issue, and most of the photographs inside that cover. You can find more compelling examples of his work on his website and in his book Texas BBQ.

Every month TMBBQ highlights a photographer with a love for barbecue as subject matter. If you’d like your photos to be included in this online gallery please contact dvaughn@texasmonthly.com
